"Description of the word an enemy"

The word enemy has variety of meanings in the dictionary.In the story"Shooting an elephant"orwell used the word in ironic way as being hostile,antagonist,murderer and attacker.The elephant in the story was the attacker for Burmese.The elepahant also murder the coolie,therefore this meaning matched the word.Moreover,the British were the oppressors for Burmese and the writer himself.They hate the British,in this case the word again matched.However,it differs in literally terms,like as not being in the state of fight or war.
